Every morning, Dottie tucked one speckled jelly bean under the ribbon of her basket and hopped to the tall tulips before the bellbirds woke. The bean looked like a snack, but it was her tiny rain rattle; when shaken beside the tulips, it called the sleepy flower-bells. One windy morning, whoosh! A butterfly bumped the bow, and the bean bounced into the grass. “Not yet!” Dottie cried, as petals swished and candy wrappers crinkled.
Because of that, she chased it past daisies, under bean-shaped clouds, and around a buzzing buttercup tunnel. Because of THAT, she had to stop each time it rolled, waiting for the grass to still so she could hear its tick-tick-tick. At last, the wind dropped. Dottie held the bean to the tulips, shook it once, and the meadow rang bright as sunshine. If you spot a speckled jelly bean near her basket, shhh—it may be saving its tick-tick-tick for tomorrow morning.
