Warm flour puffed on the bakery counter as Della set herself a speedy challenge: two buns, one tray, all the way around the big wooden table. “Ready, steady, roll!” she whispered, and her shoes pat-patted past the cupcakes, the bread loaf, and the jars marked FLOUR and SUGAR.
The room seemed to join her dash. Star cookies clicked softly on their string. The window clouds drifted like slow little ships. Della turned the corner with a grin, keeping the buns snug on the tray.
Then she heard it: tap, tap, tap from inside the sugar jar. Not a mouse—three tiny sugar spoons were bouncing along, counting her steps like a parade drum. Della laughed so hard her hat flower wiggled, but the buns stayed put.
She finished right where the warm flour had puffed, exactly where she belonged. If you peek at the bakery shelf, maybe those star cookies are still cheering, too.
