Every evening, Arlo slid the mail pouch beside his seat, tapped two round dials, and chose the shortest line across his folded map. He liked the soft click-click of switches and the cottony clouds glowing outside the glass. One evening, the map hummed under his thumbs.
Because of that, Arlo opened it wide and found a silver moth standing on the dotted route, its wings smelling faintly of rain. “This way,” it whispered. Because of that, Arlo followed the moth’s tiny tremble past the usual line, where moonlit clouds parted and a whole flock of lantern balloons bobbed in the sky. Finally, he circled low so every sleepy window below could see the floating lights, and his joy felt too big to keep in one cockpit. Next time you spot the dotted route on his map, can you imagine the hum under his thumbs?
