Every night after the cocoa carts clattered away, Keela sorted the joke-spell books in the snow-window library. She wanted to find one prank that belonged on the front shelf, not the dusty “Too Silly” cart. The room smelled like pine ink and cold glass, and her bell hat went ting whenever she reached too high.
Until one night, a tiny footnote crawled out of a book and sneezed glitter onto her nose. “Quit skipping me,” it squeaked. Because of that, Keela read the small print aloud, and every shelf hiccuped. Because of THAT, the joke spells swapped endings: a burp charm politely bowed, and a tickle curse demanded a library card.
At last Keela wrote the footnote its own title in red ink: Important Nonsense. The whole library settled around her with happy creaks, as if it had saved that desk just for Keela. If you peek at the open book, you might catch the next glitter sneeze before her bell hat goes ting.
