Every evening, Tolli knelt on the snowy fir path and tapped each hanging star. Ting, ting, ting went the bright ones, while his puppy, Mopsy, sniffed the cold air for cinnamon smoke. Tolli wanted to hear the tiny silver jingle that told the moon lamps when to wake.
Until one evening, the last star made no sound at all. Because of that, Tolli sat very still instead of hurrying home. Because of that, Mopsy stopped pawing the snow and pressed her ear to a striped ornament by Tolli’s boot.
“Wait,” whispered Tolli. Inside the ornament, where nobody had listened, came a soft jingle-jingle, like a spoon in a teacup. At last the moon lamps blinked on, one by one, and if you peek at Mopsy’s bright face, you might guess who heard the snowy fir path first.
