Under the curly clouds of Moonwood, Lumi stepped slowly along the leaf-soft path, listening for the tiny tick of mooncrumbs. She wanted one silver crumb for her cape button, so she counted her hoofsteps: one, two, hush. Dry leaves skittered around her socks, and the air smelled like pumpkin skin and cool grass. Above the trees, the crescent moon smiled as if it knew how to wait.
A little bat fluttered out with wings like folded paper. “Psst. Not up there,” he squeaked, and pointed with his nose. Beside the path, the jack-o’-lantern’s grin glowed with specks of moonlight tucked behind its teeth. Lumi laughed softly and held out her button. The pumpkin blinked, plink—one crumb rolled free, bright and patient. Next time you see Lumi under the curly clouds, can you find where the mooncrumb waited?
