Every morning, before the reef band tooted its conch horns, Calista gathered pretty things for the parade crown she was making: fan-shells, pearl seeds, and curly bits of coral that tickled her fingers. She wanted to wear something she had built herself, not the heavy palace crown that smelled like old treasure chests. Until one day, a bubble-snail popped out of a clam and blew a rude blorp right onto her best shell.
Because of that, the shell stuck to Calista’s wrist. Because of THAT, three nosy silver fish tried to nibble it free, and the sticky foam caught pearl seeds, tiny shells, and one wobbly star charm in a crooked, sparkly heap. Calista laughed so hard bubbles bounced from her nose. “Hold still, you marvelous gluepot!” she told the snail. At last, she shaped the mess into a crown lighter than sea foam and twice as silly. When the reef band began, Calista lifted it high, proud down to the tip of her tail; next time you spot the little shell in her hand, listen for the blorp that started it all.
