🎨 How to color it

Color the princess’s gown lavender, the carriage panels pearl pink, the star crests bright gold, and the distant castle a soft stone gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny wheel spokes, curtain folds, flower petals, and curled roof scrolls, saving broader marker strokes for the carriage body and sky. Try a twilight fade behind the clouds, with pale blue near the castle and rosy peach around the waving flags.

All along the castle road, the two carriage flags snapped left, right, left, though the air smelled still as warm bread. Princess Vesper had set herself a challenge: she would not ask the coachman a single question until the carriage passed the seventh white stone. If she waited, she was sure the flags would give away their secret.

The wheels clicked over the first stone. Then the second. Clouds curled above the towers like sleeping cats, and the lantern glass made a tiny clink with every bump. At the sixth stone, Vesper heard it: not wind, but a whisper from the star crest on the carriage door. “Ready?” it breathed.

At the seventh stone, the crest’s little star flashed. The flags lifted by themselves and waved to the castle, to the trees, to every hidden window watching from afar. Vesper laughed softly. “So you were saying hello first.” Ever since, royal carriage flags have waved even on windless days, because Princess Vesper waited long enough to hear the stars teach them manners—can you find the crest that whispered first?
