🎨 How to color it

Color the mother cat warm silver-gray, the kitten soft cream with darker tabby stripes, the wicker basket honey brown, and the potted plant deep green. Use sharp colored pencils for the fine fur lines and basket weave, saving broader marker strokes for the window panes and folded blanket. Try making the pillows two different patterns—tiny blue flowers on one and coral stripes on the other—so the cozy nest feels lovingly patched together.

Under the rainy window, Rue pressed one paw to each corner of the square cushion and whispered, “Mine, mine, mine, mine.” She had invented Corner-Keeper, a game where every sharp edge had to be guarded before the house clock went tick-tock-tick. The wicker basket smelled of sun-warmed grass, and the old blanket scratched pleasantly under her chin. Rue wanted all four corners at once, but her mother’s tail kept sweeping one away like a soft broom.

Rue stretched longer, hooked a claw in the basket rim, and reached for the farthest corner. Creeeak. The wicker bent, not breaking, just bowing inward as if it had been waiting for her. The cushion slid, the blanket puffed, and Rue rolled gently against her mother’s side, where the loud rain became a hush. “There,” Mama murmured, warm as milk. “No corners can run off from a circle.”

Ever since, the best cat baskets have curved sides and rounded corners, so kittens playing Corner-Keeper end up tucked exactly where they belong. Look at the basket rim again—you can almost hear it creak under the rainy window.
