Under the linen shed, Orvo counted his moon-buttons by touch: one, two, three—then an empty loop. The missing button had rolled out before midnight, and without it his wrappings would flap like frightened flags. He stepped beyond the shed into the pumpkin patch, where dry leaves scratched his ankles and jack-o’-lanterns grinned with candle-smoke breath.
A vine tugged his loose bandage. To free it, Orvo had to tear off a strip and tie the vine back from the path. The patch went still. Then, from an uncarved pumpkin everyone had ignored, came a tiny tap-tap-tap. “Open the quiet one,” whispered something inside.
Orvo pressed his ear to the cool rind and found a slit hidden under a curled leaf. Inside waited not his button, but a round silver seed humming with moonlight. He tucked it into the empty loop, and all his bandages settled snug and soft. Back in the shed, the seed kept whispering directions for secret paths, starting with one, two, three—then the place no one thought to look.
