🎨 How to color it

Color the race car bright cherry red, the driver’s helmet sunny yellow, the Victory trophy gold, and the checkered flag black and white. Use broad crayon or marker strokes on the big hood and windshield, then switch to a sharpened pencil for the grille stripes and tiny dashboard lines. Try making the crowd shirts blue and green so the red number 1 car pops right off the track.

Every day, Gus rolled one quiet lap before the gates opened, counting the bumps in the track: thrum, thrum, thrum. His challenge was to cross the stripe without squeaking his brakes once. But one morning, the grandstands rattled early, and a checkered flag snapped in the wind like popcorn popping.

Because of that, Gus missed his first turn and skidded toward the wide lane. Because of that, he spotted a skinny inside path, smooth as ribbon, right beside the flagpole. “I can do it!” he beeped. He tucked in, hummed low, and zipped through without a squeak.

At the stripe, the trophy glittered, the crowd whooped, and Gus felt the track buzzing under his tires like it knew his name. Next time you see his front wheels, can you tell which way they just came from—thrum, thrum, thrum?
