Every evening, Junia dusted the observatory library, sorted potion bottles by wobble, and copied symbols from the old grimoire without ever saying a spell out loud. Spoken magic made her tongue feel too big. She only wanted to finish one perfect page before the midnight bell, while the dome above ticked with cold starlight and smelled of candle wax and dried lavender.
Until one day, the grimoire sneezed. A puff of glittery smoke curled out, flipped three bookmarks, and knocked a crystal ball into Junia’s lap. Because of that, she crawled under the reading table to catch it and found a tiny trapdoor where nobody swept. Because of THAT, a brass beetle popped out wearing a paper crown and squeaked, “Read the crumb spell!”
Junia’s knees bumped the floorboards. The spell was written on the underside of the table in toast crumbs, crooked but clear. She whispered it once. Nothing. She swallowed, smelled burnt sugar, and said it louder. The grimoire burst open, laughing spirals into the air, and every stale biscuit in the library marched back to its tin. Next time you spot those curls above the book, see if one still looks like a very proud crumb.
