Beside the warm rug, Nico the fox stirred his cocoa three times and whispered, “I invented a game.” He tapped his striped sleeve. “We sip, sniff, and guess what the room is thinking.” Bea Bunny sniffed her mug. “The tree is thinking jingle.” Tuck Badger sniffed his. “The stockings are thinking wiggle toes.” The fire popped—pif!—and everyone giggled into the chocolatey steam.
They kept guessing. The poinsettias thought red thoughts. The presents thought crinkle thoughts. Then Bea’s cocoa made a tiny star-shaped bubble. Tuck’s made a bell-shaped bubble. Nico’s made a fox-tail swirl. “Wait,” said Nico. “The cocoa is guessing us!” So they played both ways, asking the room and answering their mugs, until every curl of steam seemed to wink. Next time you see three cups by a tree, can you tell which one is thinking fox-tail swirl?
