Every day, Rollo raced to the harvest blanket to sniff the pie first. The crust smelled buttery and warm, and the dry leaves went skitter-skat under his paws. His friend Tansy always brought corn, and Rollo always brought his tiny fork.
Until one day, the pie plate was there, but no pie cutter. “The first slice is missing!” Rollo squeaked. Because of that, he and Tansy dug through the corn pile—rustle, bump, roll—and found a folded leaf where nobody ever looked. Because of that, they followed its curly arrow to the cornucopia, then to the basket, then back to the blanket.
At last, tucked under one striped ear of corn, they found the little wooden cutter, along with a note: FOR THE TWO WHO BELONG AT THIS PICNIC. Rollo cut two crumbly slices, and the leaves skitter-skatted again; can you spot the corn that kept the secret?
