🎨 How to color it

Color the turkey’s body chestnut brown, the fanned tail feathers golden yellow and rust orange, the pilgrim hat charcoal gray, the pumpkin bright orange, and the corn kernels buttery yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the scalloped breast feathers and corn kernels, then switch to markers for the big pumpkin sections and wide tail panels. Try making the tail glow from deep orange at the bottom to pale gold at the tips, like secret sunset stripes behind the hat.

The story behind this coloring page

The Hat’s Secret Seat — Under the corncrib steps, Bramble kept one shiny brass buckle for the harvest table centerpiece. Read the full story →

Under the corncrib steps, Bramble kept one shiny brass buckle for the harvest table centerpiece. He polished it with a dry corn husk until it smelled dusty-sweet, then set out from his straw nest to fetch one perfect red berry for the middle. Between the pumpkin row and the rattly corn shocks, the wind snatched the buckle—plink!—and Bramble felt his hat grow suddenly plain.

He searched where anyone would look: under pumpkin vines, beside yellow kernels, even in the scratchy leaf pile by the fence. Nothing but cold dirt on his toes and leaves whispering, hush-hush. Then a chickadee tapped his hat brim. “Not down,” she chirped. “In.”

Bramble lifted the hat. Hidden inside the band was the buckle, caught on a folded scrap that said, Save this seat for Bramble. The farmers had made him part of the table all along. He waddled home slower, wearing the secret warm as sunlight; next time you spot his bright buckle, you’ll know exactly where he belongs—under the corncrib steps.
