🎨 How to color it

Color the ornament cherry red with peppermint-white stripes, the polka dots bright gold, the bow emerald green, and the pine needles deep forest green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow pine needles and ribbon folds, then switch to a broader marker tip for the ornament’s round sections. Try making the little starbursts icy blue so they sparkle against the warm red and gold ornament.

Under the sofa, where dust smelled like old wool and cookie crumbs, Tessa rolled against a spool of ribbon and listened to the parlor tree creak. She wanted the highest hook, the one near the window, where moonlight made every ornament look important. So when the cat bumped the storage box open, Tessa tipped herself out, clink-clinked across the floor, and began her tiny journey.

Halfway up the tree skirt, she met a silver moth hiding in a fallen pine needle. “The top branch pinches,” the moth whispered, as if sharing a secret. Tessa traded one green ribbon tail to patch the moth’s torn wing, then followed its flutter to a lower branch tucked beside warm pine, gold lights, and the soft hum of family voices.

There, her missing ribbon tail curled like a smile, and the hook held without wobbling. She had the tree smell in her bow and the room’s whole glow around her. Next time you spot the ornament under the pine needles, see if you can keep Tessa’s secret: the best place was never the highest one, but the one where she belonged.
