Every day, Seren tucked a dull blue coat button into the ribbon of her gown before she ran the castle road. It had belonged to Captain Venn, who had pressed it into her palm years ago and said, “Small things open stubborn days.” Seren wanted to prove it useful, but every morning it only clicked against her laces while hooves clattered, flags snapped, and bakers shouted over the warm smell of rolls.
Until one day, the castle’s front gate jammed with a caravan outside and storm-drums booming beyond the hills. Because of that, the porters yanked the chain too hard, and the iron winch spat out its holding peg. Because of that, the gate began to slide down, trapping the road between shouting guards and frightened ponies.
Seren saw the empty peg hole, round and waiting. She pulled out the button, wedged it under the winch tooth, and held her breath while the chain groaned like a bear. Click! The gate stopped. The caravan rolled in just before rain silvered the stones. Next time you spot her on the curving road, see if you can guess where the dull blue button is hiding, still clicking against her laces.
