Below the map table, Soren kept one palm on the warm engine wall and one eye on the tide notebook. He wanted the missing morning note before Captain Ilya asked for it. Without that number, the ship would have to circle the gray northern sea until noon. So Soren zipped his coat, stepped out from the humming chart room, and climbed into wind that smelled of salt and cold metal.
A gust snatched his wool cap and rolled it along the deck. Soren chased it past rope coils, wet railings, and the orange lifeboats, paying for his trip with soaked sleeves and stinging cheeks. Near the bow, where the anchor line dipped and rose, a dark shell bumped softly against the waves. A sea turtle blinked up, trailing a ribbon of kelp caught on one flipper.
“Hold still,” Soren whispered. He freed the kelp with numb fingers. Tucked in the ribbon was the lost tide slip, washed clean but readable. The turtle paddled beside the ship for three slow breaths, then turned into a smooth stripe of water Captain Ilya called the home current. Soren brought back the note and something better: the sea did not feel huge anymore. It felt like a place that knew his name, below the map table and beyond it too; can you find where the anchor line dips and rises?
