🎨 How to color it

Color the wooden ship chestnut brown, the ghost sails pale mint, the skull flags charcoal black, and the crescent moon buttery yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny bats, portholes, ropes, patches, and skull emblems, then switch to broader strokes for the sails and waves. Try a dusky purple-to-navy sky behind the stars so the pale ghosts and yellow moon glow like lanterns.

Under the licorice-dark sky, Vega tucked a small wooden crescent beneath her arm and hurried across the deck of the Merry Murmur. She had carved it herself from driftwood smooth as soap, sanding one smiling cheek until her fingers smelled of salt and cedar. The captain’s skull flag snapped pop-pop-pop above her, and three ghost sailors hummed as they raised the patched sails for the midnight cruise.

Vega fixed the crescent to the bow with silver nails she had counted all week. When the ship dipped into the first wave, wind slipped through a tiny notch in her carving. Fweee-ooo! The sound curled upward, not like a whistle, but like a bright invitation. Bats swooped from cloud to cloud, stars blinked harder, and the real moon leaned close with the same grin Vega had carved by hand.

Then the castles on both far shores answered with window-lights, one by one, as if her little moon had opened the whole sea. “I made that,” Vega whispered, and the deck seemed to lift under her bare ghost toes. Next time you spot the smiling crescent above the ship, listen for the fweee-ooo that began under Vega’s arm.
