Behind the blue curtain, just before the house lights warmed up, Elara rolled her ribbon stick between her palms and whispered, “One clean swirl. Just one.” The satin tail hissed softly across the floor, smelling faintly of rosin and dust. Then it snagged high on a painted moon, tugging her off her safe practice square. Nobody was looking. That was the secret part. Elara climbed onto the narrow side step, knees fizzy, and reached past the curtain ropes.
The ribbon came loose with a tiny pop, but something clicked inside the stick. Out slid a folded scrap, thin as a gum wrapper. In silver pencil it said: If the first loop shakes, make it bigger. Elara tucked the note under her wristband, though the metal step had scraped her ankle and left one brave red line.
When the music began, her first circle wobbled. Elara almost stopped. Instead, she made the next loop enormous, then another, until the ribbon wrote secret roads through the air. She came back to her mark with the note, a stinging ankle, and a grin she hadn’t practiced. If you trace the biggest loop, you might guess where the secret was hiding behind the blue curtain.
