Every evening after the last commuter train hissed away, Otto scraped the cold steel slab clean at Platform 9’s ice cream kiosk. He liked the shick-shick sound of the metal paddles and the sugary smell of strawberries, but he mostly liked finishing before the station pigeons began their crumb inspections.
Until one day, his scraper bumped something hard beneath a flat ribbon of vanilla. Out popped a tiny brass key, sticky with cream. Because of that, Otto tried it in the only place nobody ever checked: the napkin holder wedged between the menus. Click! A secret drawer slid open, packed with folded paper boats that read: FOR DELAYED PASSENGERS, TOP WITH SOMETHING SILLY. Because of THAT, Otto rolled six extra curls, hid mango cubes inside one, blueberries inside another, and tucked a cookie grin into the smallest boat.
When the late train groaned in, tired people found free treats waiting on the bench, and nobody saw Otto duck behind the sauce bottles, grinning. “All aboard the snack train,” he whispered. If you visit the kiosk after the last hiss of steam, check the scraper’s edge for a wink of brass and listen for shick-shick.
