All night, the roost sang the same hollow note: tap, flap, hum. From his snug crack under the tower eaves, Nico heard a thinner sound drifting above the roof, like a spoon circling a glass. He wanted that sound for the roost song, so he squeezed out into the cold, peppery wind and flew toward the crooked chimney.
The roof tiles clicked under his claws. A star snagged in a loose shingle scratched his wing, and soot dust made him sneeze. “Just one more peek,” Nico whispered. Inside the chimney, where nobody in the house had thought to look, a tiny silver bell hung from a cobweb, ringing only when moonlight touched it.
Nico nudged the bell free and carried it back under the eaves. It chimed with every wingbeat, not thin anymore but bright and close, as if the whole haunted hill had saved him a place in its song. Next time you spot the chimney above the high roof, imagine the sound drifting out: tap, flap, hum.
