Behind the tallest panel in the wire room, Calder pressed his ear to the wall and listened for the tiny tick-tick that had been teasing him all week. He wanted to fix it before the evening lamps came on, but every cord looked snug, every gear sat still, and the air smelled only of dust, rubber, and warm metal. “Don’t tell the grown-ups yet,” whispered the little square plug from the shelf. “This feels like a secret.”

Calder climbed the short stool, set his thumb on the switch, and heard the tick again—not inside the wires, but behind the plate where nobody ever looked. With one careful turn of his screwdriver, he found a folded speck of brass no bigger than a fingernail. It was stamped with a tiny smiling face, and when the switch moved, the brass tapped the wall: click, hello; click, I’m here.

Calder tucked it back exactly where it belonged, because some secrets are meant to keep working. Ever since, good workshop switches have clicked like a small friend answering from behind the wall. If you catch that tick-tick beside the lightning bolts and coils, you’ll know Calder left the hello right where it belonged.
