🎨 How to color it

Use golden ocher for the giraffe, leafy green for the twigs and bushes, sky blue for the clouds, and brick red for the arched zoo sign. The giraffe’s many spots and the keeper’s patterned vest are perfect for careful pencil layering, working one small shape at a time. Try making the leaves in two greens so the little branches in the keeper’s hands look freshly picked.

The story behind this coloring page

The Leaf Worth Sharing — The small pressed leaf in Calder’s pocket had crossed three winters with him, thin as paper and smelling faintly of tea. Read the full story →

The small pressed leaf in Calder’s pocket had crossed three winters with him, thin as paper and smelling faintly of tea. When the giraffe house ran out of sweet acacia tips before visiting hour, he left the shaded bench where he always sorted feed and walked the long path to the nursery beds, the leaf tucked under his thumb.

The gardener had one bundle left, silver-green and rain-cool. “For your tallest friend,” she said, but the string snapped, and Calder’s keepsake slid into the damp soil. He stood still, then pressed it beside a young sapling instead of wiping it clean. The giraffe’s tongue curled around the fresh leaves with a soft whisk, and a child nearby laughed so brightly that Calder handed out the rest twig by twig. By noon, everyone along the fence was carrying a bit of green, and the joy felt too tall to fit in one pocket.
