Every evening, when the stone flats cooled and the palms smelled dusty-sweet, Niko pressed one claw to a crack in the ground and played his new game: one soft roar, then a very long wait. If the earth hummed back, he moved one step closer to the sound. Most nights, only beetles clicked under the rocks.
