🎨 How to color it

Color the spinosaurus moss green with a burnt-orange sail, make the leaping fish silver-blue, and shade the tree trunks warm gray-brown with deep green ferns. Use sharp colored pencils for the small scales, teeth, claws, and fern fronds, then switch to light side-strokes for the wide ripples around its legs. Try a pale teal-to-clear gradient in the water so the spinosaurus’s orange sail stands out like a secret signal.

Under the low trees, Kessa pressed one claw into wet sand and whispered her challenge: count four fish-splashes before the sunbeam slid off the tallest fern. One splash was easy. Two slapped silver water onto her snout. Then the stream went still, smelling of mud and crushed leaves, as if it were holding its breath.

Kessa stepped out from her cozy sandbar, past cold stones that nipped her toes. A dragonfly zipped ahead like it knew a secret path. She followed, paying for her curiosity with a scratch from a root and a mouthful of bitter fern. At the bend, three fish burst up—plip, plip, plip—but not four.

“Come on,” Kessa breathed. She lowered her sail and listened. Beneath the usual gurgle came a tiny underground chuckle. She scraped away a mat of leaves, and clear spring water bubbled free. The fourth fish shot through the new channel in a bright arc. Next time you see those leaping fish, keep the secret: the stream was counting with Kessa.
