Under the honey-brown park bench, Arlo slid three pebbles into a chalk circle and named his new game Quiet-Heart. To win, he had to collect three small sounds before the fountain bell rang: leaf-shiver, shoe-scuff, and one surprise. The breeze smelled like cut grass, and his cape made a soft flup against his knees.
He stepped away from the bench, past the lampposts, listening hard. Leaf-shiver came first. Shoe-scuff came from his own boot. Then a thin jingle trembled above him. A striped kitten crouched on a branch, too frightened to climb down. Arlo’s stomach gave a tiny flip; the branch looked higher than his usual brave. He invented one new rule: whisper before reaching. “I’m here,” he said, and stretched up. Bark scratched his glove, and a twig tugged his cape, but the kitten pressed its warm paws into his hand.
When the fountain bell finally rang, Arlo carried the surprise sound back under the bench: purr-purr-purr, softer than chalk dust. Next time you see the striped kitten above his smiling face, can you hear Quiet-Heart winning?
