🎨 How to color it

Color the surfer’s shirt coral red, his floral surfboard teal with hibiscus-pink flowers, the giant wave turquoise, and the smiling sun golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many thin water curls and foam lines, turning the page as you follow the wave’s spiral. Try shading the inside of the barrel from pale aqua to deep blue so the surfer looks tucked inside a secret tunnel of water.

By the hot shed behind the coconut grove, Reef sanded his new board until hibiscus dust clung to his wrists. He had set himself one challenge before sunset: ride through a wave without touching its wall, then paint one tiny secret mark underneath. The sea smelled of salt and green kelp, and beyond the reef a low hum rolled under the water like someone turning a giant shell.

Reef paddled out, his handmade board warm under his chest. The first waves slapped flat. The next one rose too steep. Then he heard a whisper from the foam: “Show me what your hands made.” Reef pressed his toes to the flowers he had carved, leaned into the hush, and the water bent over him—not crashing, but curling, as if it wanted a closer look.

He slid through the blue tunnel with spray ticking his cheeks, proud enough to laugh into the roar. Ever since that ride, summer waves curl around surfers’ boards to peek at the brave little things people make by hand; next time you see one, check whether it is bending close to admire the flowers.
