🎨 How to color it

Color the turtle’s shell moss green with sandy yellow scutes, make the coral peach and lavender, and dot the bubbles with pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the shell plates, face spots, and branching coral, then switch to smooth marker fills for the turtle’s wide flippers. Try a soft blue-to-turquoise wash behind the bubbles so the little fish and the turtle’s shiny eyes stay bright.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the fizzing blue of the coral garden, Bix tucked a gray pebble beneath his front flipper and counted bubbles. Plip, plip, plip. He wanted the pebble to hum, as it had done only once beside the warm sand. Cleaner shrimp tap-danced on a sponge. Tiny fish nibbled at his shadow. Bix waited anyway, even when a crab tried to sell him the pebble back for two clam burps.

By afternoon, the reef smelled like salt and cucumber peel, and the pebble still sat quiet. “Maybe it’s shy,” Bix whispered. He rolled it between two pieces of coral where the current made a tiny whistling sound. Nothing happened—except a very serious bubble slipped out of the pebble’s crack and floated upward wearing a ring of silver light.

Then Bix understood. It wasn’t a humming pebble at all. It was a moon-snail’s pocket bell, left to announce when the tide turned sleepy. One by one, bubbles chimed against the coral: tink, tonk, plip. The crab bowed. The fish danced in crooked circles. And if you follow the bubbles around Bix’s smiling face, you might spot the plain little pebble quietly rewarding all that waiting.
