🎨 How to color it

Color the cupcake wrapper butter yellow, the frosting ribbons strawberry pink and vanilla cream, the cherry bright red, and the pantry jars soft blues and greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny sprinkles, star candies, and narrow wrapper pleats, then fill the bigger frosting bands with smooth marker strokes. Try making the frosting spiral change from pale pink at the bottom to rosy pink near the cherry, as if the sweetness is glowing upward.

Behind the pantry’s tall shelves, where glass jars clicked softly in the night, Tessa rolled her wrapper pleats against a silver plate. She wanted the celebration to begin before the little cousins arrived, but the room stayed hush-hush, smelling of sugar, paper sacks, and lemon oil. The frosting spiral held still. The sprinkles held still. Even the cherry on top leaned over like it was listening.

Then Tessa heard a tiny clink from inside the cherry stem. Not above it. Inside it. She nudged the cherry with one careful frosting curl, and a secret golden bell slipped out, no bigger than a pea. “So that’s where the joy was hiding,” she whispered. When it rang, the sound was bright enough to make every jar lid tremble and every star sprinkle shine.

Ever since that night, cupcakes have worn cherries on top to keep a hidden bell close by, ready to call everyone to share the first sweet bite. If you spot the tall cherry stem, you know the next chime may be tucked right under it.
