Every evening, Nerith raced the rimwalk above the orbital chart chamber, timing her boots to the click-click-click of brass planets and the hiss of chalk dust in the vents. She wanted to chart the fastest path through the comet lanes before the solstice bell. Until one day, every painted orbit began to spin backward, flinging starlight across the ceiling like sparks from a struck blade.
Because of that, Nerith chased the wrong trail and found the constellations pointing not outward but in. Because of that, she pressed her palm to the plain white center everyone used as a pause mark, and it rang—low, bright, impossible. “Nobody measures the middle,” she whispered.
At last the still circle opened just wide enough to show a hidden route, clean and silver, running beneath every swirl she had ever trusted. Nerith laughed, breathless, and vaulted after it as the brass planets click-click-clicked behind her.
