Every afternoon, Nico rolled to the practice circuit, stopped beside the same shaggy grass, and counted three honks before zooming toward the curved lane. He had just invented a game called Sneak-a-Start: honk once for the clouds, twice for the fence, three times for the curve, then go. It made the little gravel bits tick-tick under his tires, as if they were laughing too.
Until one day, the gate stayed shut. Nico honked once. Nothing. He honked twice, and a beetle popped out of the grass like a tiny referee. Because of that, Nico waited for the beetle to cross the warm blacktop. Because of that, he heard a soft clink inside his spoiler: a loose bolt wiggling with every impatient vroom. “Fine,” Nico muttered, “the game gets a bonus round.”
He sat through seven cloud shadows, one sneezy breeze, and the smell of hot rubber from the pit shed. Finally, the mechanic tightened the bolt, the beetle reached the curb, and the gate swung open. Nico honked three perfect honks and shot forward smoother than a secret. Next time you spot him waiting by that bend, count carefully—the gravel may still be laughing tick-tick.
