Beside the willow bench, Maribel tapped two pebbles together—click, click—and made a new game: Ripple-Queen. To win, she needed one perfect pond token before the bell’s slow fifth note. Her cousin Junia waited on the grass, holding the pretend crown, while the lily pond smelled of wet reeds and warm mud.
Maribel stepped from the dry path onto the squishy bank. Her slipper sank with a soft schlup. The smooth shell she wanted floated just beyond the nearest lily pad, turning and turning in the rings of water. A swan drifted between her and the shell, feathers whispering like paper fans. “Please, may I pass?” Maribel whispered.
The swan did not move. Maribel waited through one bell note, then another. At last, she set her shiny pebble on a lily pad. The swan nudged a loose feather toward her, light as a sigh, and the shell bobbed safely to shore. Maribel returned without the pebble, but with the feather-token and a slower smile. Next time you see the swan’s ripples, can you tell which prize took the longest to arrive?
