Before breakfast, Orla folded silver paper into a tiny bell for her window shelf. It looked quiet. She wanted it to ring, just once, so she tucked it in her pocket and stepped outside where rain smelled like clean stone and buses sighed at the curb.
At the clock tower stop, an old conductor shook his ticket punch. “Clack-clack… stuck,” he said. Orla gave him the brass button from her coat, pressing it into the handle with both thumbs. Click!
