By the west gate, the harvest truck smelled of hay dust, apple skins, and warm iron. Hazel only wanted the little apple crate left in the bed, the one with a cracked corner perfect for holding her rock collection, but the road beyond the gate had a hollow tap-tap under it whenever the wind slid over the fields.
She stepped down from the safe running board and followed the sound past corn tassels and pumpkin stems. Burrs hooked her socks, and one apple rolled away into the weeds. Then a gray field mouse popped from a crack beside the tire, wearing a strand of straw like a sash. “Not loud,” it squeaked. “The barn is listening.”
Hazel knelt, heart thumping like the truck’s old engine. Under the dirt was a wooden lid, and under the lid lay a row of tiny seed packets, dry as paper leaves, labeled MOON BEANS. She traded her crate for the secret box and rode back grinning, with burrs on her socks and hay dust in her hair. Next time you see that loaded truck, can you find where the hollow road might tap-tap?
