Every morning, before the clinic’s bell gave its tinny ding, Kira played her private game: refill three rooms, straighten four chairs, and leave no clue except full shelves. The hall smelled like lemon wipes and rubber gloves, and her sneakers made tiny squeaks she tried to hush. One Thursday, she added a challenge—carry the big bandage box all the way from storage without bumping a single cabinet.
Halfway there, the supply cart rolled after her with a clatter, as if it had joined the game and chosen mischief. Kira grabbed it, but a drawer popped open and spilled tongue depressors like wooden french fries. Because of that, she ducked into the smallest exam room to hide the mess; because of that, she heard a sniffle behind the curtain. A boy with a scraped elbow whispered, “I don’t want everybody looking.”
So Kira slid one bandage onto the tray, set the rest where the nurse would find them, and tiptoed out before anyone thanked her. When the bell dinged, the shelves were full, the cart behaved, and one secret bandage had done its job. If you spot Kira holding the bright box, can you tell she is trying very hard not to look proud?
