🎨 How to color it

Layer warm chestnut and caramel through the dog’s paisley fur sections, make the collar teal with a gold star tag, and color the grasses in muted sage. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny spirals, dots, paw prints, and leaf veins, working one patterned patch at a time to keep the lines crisp. Try making the bone a cool ivory with pale blue shadows so it stands apart from the busier patterned paws.

At first light in Echo Canyon, Marlo trotted between ribbon-thin grasses, his collar tag tapping bright notes against his chest. The path smelled of sun-warmed dust and wild fennel, and every pawstep sent little clicks into the stone walls. He carried a white trail bone from the ranger’s cache, not to bury it, but to strike it gently on the rocks and hear the canyon answer.

The echoes grew livelier as the morning opened. Tap became tappa-tap, then tappa-tappa-tap, racing ahead of him around bends he had not reached yet. Marlo’s tail swept the sand in fast half-moons. “Louder, then!” he barked, and the canyon tossed his bark back in a dozen cheerful pieces.

From under a fern, a beetle rolled out wearing a shell striped like a tiny drum. It clicked its wings once, and Marlo’s tag, bone, bark, and tail-sweep all joined into one leaping rhythm. What he had thought was the canyon answering was the beetle collecting sounds and sending them onward to every hidden hollow.

Marlo sat very still, grinning into the ringing air. Then he tapped the bone once more, softly this time, and the beetle carried the note outward until the grasses shivered with shared joy, bright as his collar tag tapping at first light.
