Every evening, Bram pressed his bone between his paws and played his new game: count the kennel-window colors as the sun crossed them, but do not chew until the last one glowed. Amber warmed his nose, green slid over the floor, and the collar rings at his throat gave one soft tick. Then a storm folded itself over the roof, and the final pane stayed gray.
Because of that, Bram waited through the rain’s peppery smell and the drip-drip in the gutter. Because of that, the other dogs settled, one by one, until even the tennis balls lay silent in their basket. At last, a thin late beam slipped under the cloud and struck the highest paw-shaped pane. Bram lowered his head to the bone, patient as evening, while the last glow found him.
