🎨 How to color it

Color the Dalmatian’s spots jet black, the number 1 helmet bright fire-engine red, the arched brick doorway warm tan, and the coiled hose golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small spots and helmet details, then switch to smoother marker fills for the big doors, floor tiles, and fire truck panels. Try a faint smoky gray shadow under the dog’s paws and hose so the red helmet looks extra bold in front.

Under the engine’s warm hood, Pax kept one ear tilted toward the brass bell. He wanted to hear its bright clang before bedtime, the sound that made every firefighter smile. But the captain had wrapped the clapper in cloth after supper, saying, “Rest night. Quiet paws.”

Then a tiny chirr-chirr slipped through the bay. A soot-gray cricket hopped past the coiled hose and up the narrow stair to the bell loft. Pax followed, nose tickled by dust and old rainwater. At the top, the cricket sprang onto the wrapped clapper and sang against the metal. The bell did not clang; it hummed, soft as honey in a jar.

Pax tugged the cloth loose just enough for one gentle note. Bong. Downstairs, helmets lifted. Tired faces turned bright. The captain laughed and rang it once more, not for alarm, but for joy. Pax carried the cricket back to the engine, sharing the biggest sound in the quietest way. If you check the firehouse floor, you might spot where a coiled hose made room for a dog who came back with the bell’s warm song.
