Every evening, Orson lined the wrenches by size while the lift ticked cooling metal and the air smelled of rubber, oil, and old coffee. His private challenge was to hide exactly one harmless wrench where the morning crew would find it after three puzzled minutes—not two, never four. Until one night, the smallest wrench vanished before he could hide it.
Because of that, Orson searched the bench, the pegboard, even the toe of his boot, and discovered a dry little clink inside the patterned motorcycle’s headlamp rim. Because of that, he loosened the trim and out slid his missing wrench, followed by a moth, two washers, and a receipt reading: PLEASE STOP BLAMING THE CHAIN. He laughed so hard the lift echoed.
Finally, Orson pinned the receipt above the bench and left every wrench in order, except the tiny one, which he placed proudly under the headlamp rim. For once, the shop’s joke had chosen him, and the lift ticked cooling metal like applause.
