🎨 How to color it

Color the oak leaves in deep olive and fresh spring green, the grooved trunk in warm umber, the acorn caps in tawny brown, and the two squirrels in soft gray-brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the bark lines and leaf edges, then press more lightly on the open sky and rounded cloud shapes. Try giving the high branch squirrel a golden highlight, as if sunlight has slipped through the acorn-heavy canopy.

Each morning, under the giant oak, Dex stacked acorns in neat little towers and dared himself to carry six at once. The bark smelled dusty and warm, and the roots made perfect ramps for his twig-and-leaf experiments.

Then one day, a ridge wind came whooshing through the branches, clack-clack-clacking acorns down like tiny drums. Dex’s towers burst apart. Because of that, he lashed two curled leaves to a bark chip with grass string. Because of that, the chip skidded, flipped, and sent acorns bouncing past the ferns. “Not done yet!” Dex squeaked.

He wedged smooth pebbles under the corners, tied a root-fiber handle, and pulled again. This time his little rig rolled over moss, around stones, and right to the hollow between the roots. When the wind rattled the oak once more, Dex lifted his chin, proud of the thing his paws had made; if you spot the acorns near the trunk, you’ll know where his first cargo landed.
