Under the scratchy pines, Nico bounded along the winter ravine with a cedar seed tucked beneath his tongue. He wanted every hungry traveler to find a nibble before the wind combed the snow smooth. Hop, drop. Hop, drop. Behind each big fox print, he pressed one seed into the soft rim where nobody would notice his gift.
The trail curled past bent grasses and bare branches that clicked like tiny antlers. Nico’s paws prickled with cold, but he kept racing, whiskers full of pine smell and frosty air. “One more bend,” he whispered, and tucked a seed into the deepest print.
The snow inside that print popped up—plink!—and a striped field mouse lifted a round door no bigger than an acorn cap. Below it glowed a secret pantry, already lined with Nico’s seeds, plus dried berries, fern crumbs, and one shiny pebble for luck. The mouse saluted with a grass stem. Nobody had seen Nico giving, except the hidden pantry keepers under the trail.
So Nico added his last cedar seed, and the mouse slid him a warm berry in thanks. Next time you follow the paw prints past the scratchy pines, see if one looks almost too neat; Nico may have left supper there again.
