🎨 How to color it

Give the angelfish a pearly silver body with amber bands, sea-green long fins, apricot coral branches, and teal sea grass. Use sharp colored pencils for the fin rays and tiny scale clusters, then fill the wider body sections with smooth, even layers. Try making the bubble trails fade from pale blue at the bottom to nearly white at the top, as if they are carrying light upward.

Between the tube sponges, Liora pressed pearl chips into a wobbly arch and tapped each one with her nose. Plink, plink, plink. She had invented Bubble Gate, a game where players sent bubbles through handmade hoops before the tide turned. Her fins brushed soft sea grass, and the water smelled faintly of salt and broken shells. One hoop still leaned sideways, and the current was already tugging at her little shell knots.

“Hold still, please,” Liora whispered to the arch. She gathered thin coral twigs, twisted them with ribbon weed, and tied the last knot herself. The work made her mouth tired and her heart warm. When the first bubble slipped cleanly through, it rang against the pearl chips like a tiny bell. More bubbles followed, bright and round, climbing through the gate she had made.

Ever since then, bubbles in the sponge grove rise in neat little trails, as if remembering Liora’s careful hoops. If you spot the bubbles beside the tall-finned fish, you may find the first gate still playing plink, plink, plink.
