All morning, Vesper followed a single sunpath as it slipped through the open shallows. He wanted to see where the bright stripe finally rested when the tide turned. The water smelled clean and salty, and the light moved so slowly it seemed to be thinking. Around him, little silver fish circled in a wide, easy ring, flicking their tails with a soft shh-shh-shh.
Vesper did not hurry. He counted the bubbles rising past his nose, watched striped fish pass freckled fish, and let the sunpath warm the scales along his back. A round fish with bold bands drifted beside him and whispered, “Are you waiting for something?” Vesper answered, “For the light to finish its sentence.” The banded fish blinked, then began waiting too.
At last the sunpath touched the center of the circling school, and the surprise arrived: the whole ring flashed back a second sun, made from scales. The fish had not been wandering after all; they had been polishing the water with their patient swimming. Vesper turned with them, carrying both suns in his eyes. If you follow the curve of the school, can you find the place where the light finishes its sentence?
