Every day, Quill polished the curling lanes of the pattern current with his tail and pretended the bubbles applauded. One day he invented Invisible Prizes: any fish who made him laugh without knowing it won a gift they would never see coming. Because of that, he tucked shell buttons into crab doorways and tied kelp ribbons where grumpy eels would “accidentally” look handsome; because of that, the whole reef grew suspiciously generous and blamed the tide. Finally, Quill hid the last prize beneath his own fin, snickering as the water smelled of salt, ink, and nobody watching.
