🎨 How to color it

Color the tuna’s back deep cobalt blue, its belly bright silver, the small fish pale yellow, and the surface waves sea-glass green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tuna’s thin fin rays and the many tiny fish, then switch to light side-strokes for the wide water currents. Add a faint turquoise-to-navy gradient behind the bubbles so the big tuna feels like it is passing through deeper water.

Far below the slap-slap of the surface, Dax chased a low hum that trembled through his jaw. He wanted to find its source before the moon tide ended, because each note made the silver stripe along his side glow warm as a lantern. The little fish scattered whenever he passed, leaving only bubbles and the peppery smell of deep salt.

Then a stranger rose from the bluewater drop-off: a lantern squid, pale as frost, carrying one bead of light in each arm. “That sound is not a warning,” she whispered. “It is joy with nowhere to go.” She touched Dax’s glowing stripe, and the hum burst into a wide, shining shadow that spread around him without darkness.

The small fish rushed back, not hiding from Dax but traveling inside his silver shade, flashing the happy hum from one body to the next. Ever since, small fish gather in tight schools around great swimmers, sharing bright signals too big for one fish to keep. If you follow the bubble trails, can you spot where Dax’s warm silver joy is being passed along?
