Under the glassy pines, Cai buffed the empty sleigh until its brass curls smelled faintly of oranges and cold metal. The runners gave a pleased little squeak; the hills answered with polite hushes of snow. From beneath the seat popped a mirror-fox, no bigger than a mitten, wearing Cai’s grin upside down. “You missed a spot,” it said, and sneezed glitter onto every star at once. Cai laughed so hard the sleigh laughed too, then the ridge, then the pines, each echo brighter than the last. By dawn, even the quiet runners kept giggling under the glassy pines.
