At the edge of the iris arcade, Maribel invented a game: choose one curling line, follow it until it ended, and name whatever waited there. The first spiral gave her rain-scent. The second gave her the soft rasp of a leaf against her ankle. Wanting one more answer, she stepped beyond the familiar violet shade, where the stems grew taller and the air tasted green and cool.
A thorn snagged a thread from her sleeve; payment, perhaps, for curiosity. Maribel let the silver strand stay on the bramble and followed the next looping tendril into a hush so deep she heard pollen fall. At its end was no prize, only an unopened iris trembling with tomorrow’s color. She carried that trembling home inside her, and at the edge of the iris arcade, she began again.
