🎨 How to color it

Color the ballerina’s tutu petal pink, her bodice lavender, the winding key antique gold, and the floating music notes deep navy. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny scrollwork on the music box, then switch to smooth marker strokes for the wide skirt panels and sweeping background curls. Try fading the music staffs from blue to purple so the notes look as if they are spinning out of the golden key.

The story behind this coloring page

The Key’s Last Giggle — On the highest shelf of Mr. Tumble’s music shop, Elara held her pose while clocks ticked, springs hummed, and dust smelled like old paper and lemon polish. Read the full story →

On the highest shelf of Mr. Tumble’s music shop, Elara held her pose while clocks ticked, springs hummed, and dust smelled like old paper and lemon polish. She wanted to hear the whole tune without anyone poking the key halfway through. So she waited through a sneezy accordion repair, a parrot practicing scales, and three customers who said, “Just a little turn.”

At last the shop grew amber with evening. Mr. Tumble wound the key slowly—click, click, clickety-click—and Elara’s skirt began to ring with the careful notes she had been saving. Around she went, not fast, not slow, letting each bright chime land before the next one jumped.

Then, from inside the key, something went pffft. A rolled-up paper tongue sprang out, printed with tiny words: IF FOUND, PLEASE LAUGH POLITELY. Elara did. The harp on the next shelf twanged as if hiccupping, and even the parrot whispered, “Again?” Mr. Tumble laughed so hard his spectacles slid down. Next time you see that little winding key, check whether it is still trying to hide the giggle that waited through every click.
