🎨 How to color it

Color the baseball glove honey brown, the ball creamy white with cherry-red stitches, the meadow grasses fresh green, and the small daisies yellow and white. Use sharp colored pencils for the glove’s laces and ball seams, then fill the wider leather panels with smooth marker strokes. Try a golden fade on the open field behind the glove so the ball looks like it caught the last warm pitch of the afternoon.

Under the bleachers, Cass tucked a pencil behind her ear and slapped her mitt twice: thump, thump. She had given herself one strange challenge before the field club arrived—catch the tiny echo that followed every summer pitch. The diamond smelled of cut grass and warm dust, and something clicked under the bases whenever the wind held still.

Cass crouched in right field, where daisies nodded along the chalk line. A pop fly arced into the white-hot sky, but halfway down it made no sound at all. Cass opened her glove, and instead of a smack, she heard a crowd of small voices whispering, “Share us.” The ball landed soft as a peach, its red stitches wriggling like little closed mouths.

She ran to the pitcher’s mound and held the ball up. Every kid pressed in close. When Cass tossed it back, the stitches tightened into their neat curved seams, saving the cheers, gasps, and secret summer echoes inside. Ever since, baseballs have kept their whispers under red thread—listen for thump, thump, next time one rests in a glove.
